About JTPRATT
1,681 viewsMy name is John Pratt. I’ve been creating and maintaining web sites for about 10 years now. When I first started making web pages I was using Netscape Navigator 1.0 and the Trumpet Winsock to connect via dialup to the Internet on a 14.4 baud modem. I’ve used every version of Netscape there was, every version of IE, every version of Mozilla (and Firefox), I remember when animated gifs and frames were all the rage, and I used to surf the newsgroups all the time. I watched the rise of the dot com bubble, and the new social media tools now available in web 2.0. Years ago I used to write a weekly email newsletter that had more than 5,000 subscribers, and I also wrote web articles for many web sites and a few services.
I’ve owned my own business where I built, fixed, and maintained pc’s, I trained hundreds of people things from how to use the Internet and email to how to write HTML and create web sites. I worked at a (now defunct) ISP in Ann Arbor, Michigan until just before they closed their doors, and have since been working at a fortune 100 company maintaining web sites and applications for both Intranet and extranet.
I’ve owned many web sites about many things, and usually I write about things that I have life experience in, or am interested in. While I don’t seem to have time to write as much as I would like to for all of them - here are just a few…
- www.smorgasbord.net: The Smorgasbord is my oldest site, I’ve owned it since 1999. It’s been many things, but mainly it’s my ramblings about techie type stuff, from my cell phone, to drupal, or ubuntu linux, or gadgets. I just migrated it from drupal (after 2 years) to Wordpress, and it seriously needs new content
- www.cellphonehowto.com: Cell Phone How To is a site I started this site last year, after I wrote a huge article about my cell phone on Smorgasbord that drew a lot of visitors. I post what I can, when I can - usually about how to do (something) with your cell phone.
- www.ttownsound.com: I play lead guitar in a rock cover band, T-Town Sound (T-Town stands for Toledo, Ohio), and this is the band web site
- www.topjokes.info: I love a good joke, Top Jokes is where I post the funner ones I find. If I don’t find any for awhile - I don’t post.
- www.search-optimization-school.com: I’ve done SEO and search engine work for years, but some of the newer (and more fair) techniques I’m just learning to apply. This site is where I post seo type stuff as I learn it
- www.vistareview.info: Vista Review started out well, but I just haven’t been posting (all my Vista gripes and complaints) to it. I started this site when I bought a new laptop in late 2006 and was forced to get it with Windows Vista. Most of the posts have to do with Vista problems and annoyances
- www.celebritynewslive.com: Celebrity News Live grabs the latest celebrity gossip headlines, aggregates them, and posts them to the front page as they come in. Kind of like a newswire just for celeb dirt. It’s a pretty big site, and fun, but I just don’t follow the celeb gossip much anymore. I need to sell this site or something….
This site is mostly about blogging mistakes, and learning about blogging as I go. I’ve been blogging off and on for a year or two now, but I’m a bit more serious about it now. I’m hopeful that writing about my blogging experiences on this site will help many others, and also that they comment back and help me (more) as well!
