What an excellent guide. Some of my wordpress sites have been lagging a bit recently, and I think this will shed some insight as to the slowdown.

Great tips - I think a lot of people are a little scared of editing PHP pages since it looks so foreign to those used to simple HTML, but quick tips like these are a big help. Also good to know that my plugins I'm not actually using can cause a slow down. I'd better go check those as well...

I need to learn a little php as I'm always hiring folks to modify portions of code in my themes. Just the other day I called a friend and had him remove the date display from a theme I've been using. When I did so I thought to myself (once again) I need to be doing this stuff myself!

You are right that some plugins are true resource hogs, so it's definately worth it to check what plugins you really need. Your post did make go through my plugins and get rid of the unnecessary ones and overlapping functionality, so mission accomplished.

But I kinda understand people using plenty of plugins because it's just so easy and most of the time using the plugins are worth it. And changing or updating a theme doesn't require going through all the files if there are not any hacks inside the template files.
