Hey JT, in my next "tech" post I'm finally gonna roll out your blog and name it as one of my favorites. And this post is precisely why!

One of the things I found out when I was trying to cut corners with shared hosting at 3ix (that buck a month looks SOOO good!) is that if you get a spike in traffic you'll get an automatic "account suspended." 24 hours. They'll put up a page that refences "billing" so your visitors think you're some kind of non bill paying jerk.

I've seen it on other people site too with different hosting companies, and I know right off that bat "that guy must have gotten a 1000 people today." The only reason I haven't just built my own box is my internet connection. It's good, but not all the time. And God forbid I start experimenting and unplugging stuff.

@JT
It seems like you already wrote most of your next post here in response to my comment. I will start searching shared hosting now. Thank you for your recommendation.

@Thaya - in my opinion VPS accounts are such a ripoff. They sell you on the fact that there are only 4 or 6 of you per box and a shared system can be hundreds or up to a thousand.

The differences between VPS and a shared account are best described in the analogy of a cornfield and a shoebox.

The shared account is like the cornfield, where you can run the perimiter of the entire acreage. If you wanted to jump 100 feet in the air you could. Chances are if there were 100 of you on the same cornfield only a couple of you would want to run or jump that much at once anyway.

The VPS is like a shoebox. Nobody can use the shoebox but you. It's yours, 100%. But you can't break out of it or use more than what's inside it. If the server is divided "virtually" 4 or 6 ways - then you only get to use 1/4 or 1/6th of it at all times.

You see, big shared servers have 4 or 8GB or Ram. In your VPS account you're going to get 512MB, or 1 or 2 GB. I've moved from a shared host to a VPS when I had a busy growing site, and I gotta tell you - I always did better on the shared host where I could "burst" up and use the 4 or 8GB of Ram or multi-processors when I needed to. I found in the VPS it was like somebody put a "governor" on my (busy) site, and it did much worse then when I tested the limits of the shared hosting account.

It's a hard pill to swallow, but I think that in most cases you are better to suck every last resource out of a shared site and go directly to a semi-dedicated or dedicated server. It costs a lot, but if you site is getting "that busy" to need to move off a shared - you should be able to pay for your own server. I'll write more in the official next post, but IMHO VPS accounts suck.

JT,
Thank you for this insight. I'm actually thinking of moving to VPS hosting from WestHost. I know that your next installment in this series will mention it, but I'm anxious and cannot wait. Would you recommend using VPS instead of shared? Are there any drawbacks to VPS compared to shared?

I've had pretty good luck with a reseller account on hostgator. The only problem I am having right now is upgrading to Wordpress 2.5 from the auto-install script
