I don't mind paying a fee for support or at least a good manual on how to use all of the features. Case in point is guzel-pro. Its a great magazine sytle theme with many easy to use admin features but I could REALLY use a 2 or 3 page user guide.

Hi
I guess I have mixed feelings on this.People need to be compensated and if you want a hot custom theme you should pay.I have crossed paths with themes that have embedded adsense so I can only imagine how much those people made. But when it's all said and done this is the internet, one man's spam is another's steak. Many theme developers are just regular everyday people trying to make a living like anyone else I don't hate I try to be supportive to everyone.
Stumbled
Peace

Great post and an interesting debate. I have bought several premium templates and have no objection to payment as long as they come with support.

I do not have the ability to code my own nor would I want to. If someone is prepared to invest their time to deliver something to the customer they deserve payment. However much we all like free you can't build an economy on it.

What do I do with wordpress? I use it to make a living in areas where I have expertise. If you are an expert in wordpress you deserve to make a living (if that's what you choose). There are still plenty of free templates available for everyone else.

Brain Gardeners themes (which I don't own) are an excellent example of the quality you can obtain for payment and represent tremendous value for money. I hope his choice to move open source was a voluntary one.
