As a blogger, or affiliate or niche marketer you´re always looking for new ways to make money, and different avenues for exposure. Social media is the new way to connect and market to people, and some people have absolutely mastered it – and others have not. Itś funny that sometimes I see people literally spamming their affiliate links all over the place trying to make a few dollars, and they really don´t seem to know that thereś a time and place for that. It´s pretty much common sense if you ask me!

Online things are pretty much ¨Quid Quo Pro¨ (this for that). Article marketing for example – you submit your content, we give you backlinks! In online forums you are allowed to put links in your signature, and when you post offering your free help your signature and links get published (free backlinks again!). See how this works? You give a little, you get a little.

When new social media tools come along, I usually get an account to see how it works. Even if the tool sucks, I can usually get a free backlink from the profile page. I was reading Time magazine last year and they had this article about the 100 best web sites of 2009, and it listed some I never heard of. A few of them were really, really cool – and the one that has been the best is Aardvark.

Social media has always been viewed as an online conversation – but this tool really is. You can either ask or answer questions (or both). It finds somebody that is a purported expert for that topic and gets you an answer – usually in minutes (in either email or IM – or both)! When I signed up I asked a Wordpress question just to test it, and got the answer within a minute. Basically, you sign up and create a profile with the things you know about – and wait to answer incoming questions. You can do this in either email or IM. You don have to answer every question, and if you don answer quickly – Aardvark will just move on and find someone else to do it. I have to say – the service REALLY impressed me quickly. You can ask just about anything from a cooking question, to photography, electronics, video games, even personal or health questions.

So – back to how I made the money. I´ve been using Aardvark for 3 months now, and I get about 2-3 questions per week about things I know about. It usually takes 30-60 seconds to answer. Most of the questions were easy one-off answers. I´ve gotten (and not wanted) anything in return – I was just helping people. A few I gave my web site URL to for more info and free information (good exposure).

Today I got a direct question: ¨I´ve tried Dreamhost and 3 other hosts and I´m not happy – who do you recommend?¨

THIS is the right time and place for an affiliate link!

I told her ¨I have used Hostgator for 4 years now, and I´m very happy with them. Support has been great, the price is right, and their live chat feature works well¨.

The referral commission for Hostgator is $100 for a new signup, so in 30 seconds I made $100! So, keep your eyes and ears open – there are always new and unusual ways to make money – WHILE helping people and spreading a little good karma!

Whatś the strangest way you´ve made money in the last year?

You’ll see in my right sidebar on every page of this site is an ad for my eBay plugin WP-Easybay. I wrote about the WP-Easybay launch last year. I just wanted to take the time to once again explain why I like this plugin so much.

WP-Easybay was created because I couldn’t find an eBay plugin online to do what I wanted it to do in Wordpress. I had been endorsing BayRSS for about a year and then the programmer that authored it just seemed to disappear. There was no support and he didn’t even pay his affiliates commissions the last 6 months. Read my archives – I no longer endorse anything from that guy. There was always PHPBay, which is very popular online – but there were two things I didn’t like about it, the cost, and the fact it used the “IonCube loader” which encrypted the source code, and your web hosting server had to support that. At the time not all web hosts had it loaded, but many if not most do now.

Along came Fredrik Ahlen, a programmer with a promising eBay plugin called “UEAL”, and he asked me if I wanted to try it. I did, and then asked a string of questions, can you make it do this, and this, and this. He did add nearly all my suggestions, and a year later we actually decided to officially sell it through clickbank.

Believe it or not, we’re not through with the features yet – the original list I wrote is not yet complete. We have some things planned for 2010 for plugin that will simply AMAZE you! I’ll let you Visit the WP-Easybay site if you want to view the current features.

What I wanted to talk about in this post was why many people end up buying the WP-Easybay plugin, and their experience with it once they get it installed. Recently, I was asked through the contact form of the web site if the plugin would list auctions from an eBay store. I created this test page to show her it would. She bought the plugin 5 minutes later, and send me this testimonial the next day:

I had been searching for quite some time for an Ebay WP Plugin for my Wordpress site. I needed something that would specifically target my Ebay Store items and most software that I found did not have the capability to do that. When I came across WP-EasyBay
I emailed the creator of the product and he replied within a few minutes. He actually did a test page for me using my Ebay Store url and it worked like a charm!

It is rare to find someone that stands behind their product and goes above and beyond to answer questions, and seeing exactly how the plugin would display my store items sold me for sure! I will be adding this plugin to my Wordpress site and plan to utilize it on my other WP sites as well. It is easy to use and can be manipulated in so many different ways – It is actually far more versatile than many of the other Ebay WP Plugins on the market and very reasonably priced! You will not regret purchasing it as the possibilities are endless with this awesome plugin!

Thanks so much,
Kim H. in Missouri

http://stores.ebay.com/Personalized-Party-Creations

Sometimes when I get a testimonial like this – I forget to pass it along. I like a product that I don’t have to sell, because my customers sell it for me. That tells me that I did a good job getting the right features in it, documenting it, and supporting it. I like WP-Easybay because I designed it to be the most versatile eBay plugin on the market. Well, ok – Fred does do all the programming work (lol), but I did write the spec, ask for the features, and write the documentation (and do the support).

There’s a new plugin called “Newsletter Booster” I’m reviewing today which is an Opt-In Wordpress plugin with a twist. I think that you’ll like it, I’d hadn’t seen one that performed this function until I was told about this one.

All the online and Internet marketing gurus have a “list”. They spam all their unwitting list members with all kinds of garbage offers for crap that makes them rich for promoting it. It’s all hype, hype, hype – and mostly crap, crap, crap. They count on people that are down and out looking for any way to make cash online and prey on this particular demographic with long and very drawn out emotional please designed to “convert” to believers so that they will by the “next best thing” to make them rich online. If you’re getting the picture that I pretty much hate listbuilding and the “squeeze page” aspect of online marketing – I do. It’s only because those products never deliver what they promise at all – because if they were worth anything in the first place they wouldn’t have to hype it sooooo much. For gosh sakes, even the slap chop didn’t have as much hype as some of the garbage going around online.

Now that I’ve said that – let’s go over some of the positive aspects of listbuilding. Believe it or not, email based newsletters are still a viable source of marketing. It is, and it always will be. People generally don’t mind email they signed up for (unless they’re idiots that signup for everything), and you can’t beat targeted marketing. For example, I just signed up for AWeber last month to start managing my email based lists. You can find the signup form on the home of this blog. The majority of my visitors come to this site for one of two things – Wordpress, or something to do with Online Marketing. I don’t feel a bit bad about building a new list through my site, because I won’t be sending the latest “Cash Cow Money System” garbage most sites do. I’ll be sending real tools, with real reviews, real results, and some of my own ebooks and products that I’ll be launching in 2010. Damn, now I sound like a hyped up marketer!

Ok, back to this plugin and why I like it so much. “Newsletter Booster” is a Wordpress plugin that’s so simple you’ll kick yourself for not thinking of it before. Check out this image:

The image above is my comment form on this site. It’s been updated and you can see in the image above there’s a new checkbox entitled “please add me to your newsletter” and a spam disclaimer. You’re probably thinking – that’s it? I have to tell you – this could be the most profitable thing I’ll do in all of 2010! And here’s why…

This site has been online 2 1/2 years so far. I have 262 posts, 33 pages, and 2,795 comments to date. If I had had this plugin installed 2 1/2 years ago I could have potentially had 2,795 people on a email list. That would have been an incredible targeted list for people looking for Wordpress products (free and premium), and honest online marketing materials.

So, when I got my hot little hands on the Newsletter Booster plugin the other day here’s what happened.

Here’s the main configuration screen of the plugin admin. You can choose whether to activate the checkbox on the comment form, the registration form (or both). I don’t take signups to this blog – so I chose to use the comment form option. If you had a membership site, it’s good to know this option is here. You can also choose whether or not to “pre-check” the box (not a good idea, and pretty shady I might add). You can choose to ignore suspected spam (and add them to the list anyway), I left that unchecked.

Next you can choose to only signup immediately approved comments (people that have commented before that are approved), I chose not to check this because I approve every single comment in this site by hand anyway (I trust no one, lol). Next I chose to be emailed every time somebody signs up for the newsletter. You can choose whether or not registered users see the signup checkbox, but for me (on this blog) I have no registered users so I left it blank, and the last option on this screen is submit to API.

Newsletter Booster has the ability to collect emails on it’s own inside the plugin. You can’t email them from the plugin, but you can export the emails and import them into another tool for emailing if you’d like. The API functionality is great because it allows you another method for collecting email signups for a marketing list, and like I have in this example – just enter the URL to your list formatted correctly and the signups with go directly to your service, like AWeber, MailChimp, etc.

The next tab in the plugin admin is the control of the comment form:

You have the ability to have the checkbox for newsletter signup above the comment field, or below it. You have total control over the pitch line and the disclaimer text and style. You can highlight the signup area by using html or style code before and after the checkbox and text. You can control the exact same things if you choose to place the checkbox on your registration form – I won’t show that screenshot since it’s exactly the same options as the comment box.

The signup tab shows the last 25 newsletter signups:

It records the email address, name, time, comments, post, comment ID, and IP address. There’s an export tab where you can export all signups in a CSV file, and it even saves a log. The log is handy because it shows whether or not the signup was forwarded properly (if you use the API feature), and you can see if a visitor has been signed up once – and checks the box again – it just says “[email address] has already been registered” – so you don’t have to worry about duplicates.

So, if you want to know my opinion of this plugin let me show you one last image:

I installed this plugin yesterday. Today I have 11 newsletter signups. That means by the end of the month I should have about 300 new subscribers to my list. Hopefully I’ll have 3,000+ by the end of the year. I just love premium plugins that do a job and do it well, but for $37 you can’t beat this one with a stick. If you’re building a brand, or a following – this plugin is a must have.

Announcing the “Re-launch” of JTPratt’s Free Niche Site Script! My mashup script allows you to create an adsense, YouTube, Amazon, eBay site in minutes! Install it on a domain you’re not using, or in a sub-folder of an already successful site.

I’ve seen niche scripts like this before for sale for $35-75 all over the Internet the last few years. There’s no sense paying for functionality this basic when you can get it for free. This script was available for download for about 18 months and then Amazon and eBay updated their API’s and the whole thing broke. Now, this free Niche Site Script is sponsored by ebay plugin WP-EASYBAY, and I would like to thank WP EASYBAY™ programmer Fredrik Ahlen for updating and making all the necessary changes for it to work again!

Here’s what my example niche mashup site looks like:

Click here to view it live: Guitar Review Video Cafe

It’s really fun to play with and could be a cool addition to any niche based site or affiliate store. It has easy to use templates, and doesn’t require a database or installation at all! It even has a small caching system so the API’s aren’t called each time a page is rendered. Download your copy now on my official Free Niche Site Script page, and let me know what you think of it!

Well, if you’ve been following along faithfully in your RSS readers, you already know that last month I started an Online Marketing Intership program here at jtpratt.com. I was originally going to accept 4 applicants – but only found 2 that were really well suited to what I had in mind for the program. Bill Field and Prince Singh have been faithfully working away at their assigned web sites for about the last month. Why would I accept a late intern applicant only 3 weeks into the project? Well, let’s just say I can spot a good candidate when I see one, and after talking to LaShae over the phone I was convinced she would soak up every bit of information I could dish out. Enough from me, I’ll let her tell you why she signed up for the internship in her own words…

Hi, I’m LaShae Dorsey and I’m one of John’s Interns at JTPratt.com and so far it looks like I’m the only female in the group.

I’m not new to computers as my high school was one of the first in the state to have a fully functioning computer lab, with a working modem and 15 Apple IIe’s. This was the mid 80’s so for us it was a really big deal. I learned BASIC and then graduated from high school.

My educational and professional background are varied. I’ve yet to complete my Bachelor of Art Degree, just a couple more classes to go. I’ve worked as a tutor and mentor, a tutor coordinator, a construction contract administrator and commissioning and inspection agent and if you asked them, most of my bosses wouldn’t hire me again, even though they appreciate what I did while I worked with them. Many of them are now good friends. They managed to recognize something I didn’t see, until recently, my skills are better suited to an ever changing landscape.

I am curious by nature and driven to know and learn, which is not always a good combination in the corporate world. I’m also developing my ability to recognize blessings, even when they don’t look so much like blessings.

I currently maintain two blogs and work with online newbies offering them hand holding and helping them understand how to bring their service or product into an online space. Plus I help them stay away from the scams. I also work with businesses as a website coordinator.

I’ve used Wordpress.com, Blogger.com and Wordpress.org since 2005 when I first learned about them. Now I’m slowly starting to increase my use of social networks like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Friendfeed. In fact if you google my name, those sites will come up before my blogs do.

If it sounds like my life is all about online business, that’s because it is. If I’m not in front of the computer, I’m reading something I think will help me work better in an online business and in life. If I’m not reading I’m interacting with other people and business owners at conferences. I’m always watching human nature, peoples buying habits and infommercials. YES, infommercials.

I might be just a little obssessed, but in a good way.

I have a really big dream and I know internet businesses are the very best way to make it reality.

The opportunities for us to support ourselves in non-traditional ways is right here in front of us, if we get the right help.

I found Johns’s blog back in September, while I was researching some plug-ins for a client. I spent almost 16 hours reading and note taking. I’ve implemented just a few of of the things he mentions on the blog and the intern program. I really like the results. If I’d known about him 2 years ago, you and I might not be having this little introduction.

I didn’t see the application until after Bill was introduced because I spent most of my time in the archives of the blog.

I’m glad I completed it anyway, just to see what would happen, even though it was weeks after he originally posted it.

I’m definitely excited to be learning, curious about doing and ready to share what I learn with you.

I’ll leave you with this. Never believe what other people think you can’t do.

LaShae Dorsey

This is my review of the WP Robot Wordpress plugin that can be used to automate affiliate content and posting to your blog. ... read more »

This is my review of the WP Robot Wordpress plugin that can be used to automate affiliate content and posting to your blog. You can also use this plugin to enhance building a Wordpress Affiliate Store. Disclosure: If you buy WP Robot by clicking on the banner above, or the link at the end of this article – I will make a commission for referring you. It’s nice to make a little extra money for all this free information and content I give away – this blog takes hundreds of hours to maintain, and when you buy through me it validates I gave you a good review and my content is useful to those of you trying to earn money online. In addition – I actually use WP Robot, it’s a great product.

WP Robot is a Wordpress plugin that has features no other plugin (I’ve seen so far) has. It’s main function is to “autopost” content to your blog so you don’t have to. To many (including me) that spells one thing: SPAM. I’m going to show you how I use WP Robot as a legitimate way to monetize my blogs, create new content, and augment my affiliate stores.

First of all – don’t make me tell you (again) that I don’t believe in blogs and sites that have nothing but affiliate links – and no real content that provides value to anyone. I mean, if you want to setup a wordpress blog or web site with nothing but affiliate links and just push PPC (adwords) traffic to it all day long – more power to you. In that case, you won’t care if you’re ranked in search engines or not. While I do manage adwords campaigns for my clients, most of my time with my own wordpress affiliate stores is spent building authority to rank for targeted organic search terms. To do this, and do it well – you need a quality site with quality content that provides real value to visitors and that doesn’t come off as spammy. If you just installed WP Robot out of the box and started autoposting stuff – you would have created an instant spam site.

What WP ROBOT does

Before I go any further – here’s a list of features this plugin can provide (I think you’ll find it MOST impressive):

autoposting in “draft” or “published” status

randomization of post creation times

automatic tag creation (you can turn this off)

add Amazon products with affiliate links automatically

post reviews for amazon products as post “comments”

ability to post all products in specific amazon categories

create post content from one of two article directories

pull and post items from clickbank with affiliate links

pull products from eBay and embed RSS feed in posts with affiliate links

pull and post content from Yahoo answers (any country)

pull and post content from YouTube by keyword

post YouTube comments as post comments

pull items from flickr based on keyword

translate any created posts into 9 different languages

automated link cloaking

ability to post content from Yahoo news

ability to backdate and schedule posts

ability to publish content from any RSS feed

Choose How Much WP Robot Does

Another unique feature of WP Robot is it’s modular nature. The base core plugin manages keywords (which I’ll explain in the next section). The free version of WP Robot manages 20 keywords, the advanced version manages 50 keywords ($15), and the elite version manages unlimited keywords ($30). Once you have a “core” – you can add “modules”. Add the “amazon module” for $40. Add the YouTube module for $15. You can mix and match modules to make the plugin do as much (or as little) as you want. You can get it all with the elite version for $169 (currently you can get $20 off elite with the keyword “robots” at checkout), or you could just get the free core and YouTube module for only $15!

WP Robot has options Galore

Here’s the general options for WP Robot. You can choose from draft or published posts, how many hours between random posts, and tagging options.

These are the WP Robot Amazon options, and there are lots of choices here such as broad or exact match, the number of words to get from the description, you can skip products if there’s no description or picture, and even control the posting “template”.

These options are for adding articles from either Articlesbase or Sooperarticles, and Clickbank. You can control the template for either, and choose to filter ads from Clickbank items.

This option is for adding eBay items where you can control country, language, whether or not to add RSS feeds (or hardcode the auctions), and the template for posting the eBay items as well.

With Yahoo answers content you can choose to leave the attribution link back to Yahoo (or not), which country, and the template for posting questions.

With the YouTube and Flickr modules you can control, language, video size, templates, images size, content type, and relevance.

The last options available are for translation. You can not only choose what to translate (auctions, amazon items, articles, etc.), you can choose to only translate post titles if you want, and you can translate any post into 3 additional languages. This is a great feature for multilingual or multicultural sites.

How does WP Robot work?

Well, now that you’ve seen all the features and modules that you can use – it’s time to see how this whole thing works. You enter keywords into WP Robot, and setup options for each keyword.

This is the entry box for adding keywords. Chose a keyword, and “category” are your wordpress categories. Choose how often to post (in days or hours), and what to post. The options you have available are the modules you have installed. You can choose one (or all) available items to create posts for. If you choose more than one option for keyword, WP Robot will choose an item randomly based on the “probabilities” you entered in another setup screen – where you choose what percentage of the time to use each item. The items in the third column are specific catetgories and departments for Amazon, eBay, and Yahoo Answers.

Once you have entered keywords they are listed in the main plugin admin, showing what category they are posting to, how many posts have been created with what modules, and when the next post is scheduled for. By adding in multiple keywords drawing content and affiliate items from multiple areas – posting in multiple categories, you can build up content in a Wordpress blog pretty quickly.

What About Duplicate Content and Spam?

I know, now you’re drooling at the mouth from all these features, but you remember what I said earlier about a “spam” site – don’t you? You should, don’t buy this plugin and create yet another useless garbage site. Also – don’t buy it, put it on auto-pilot, and expect to be the next online millionaire automatically either. If you autopost everything you’ll probably get deindexed by google and get no where.

Here are some rules for success that I follow with this plugin:

Set all auto-posts to “draft” status on creation

don’t auto-create tags

don’t publish anything with this plugin without 2-3 paragraphs (100-500 words) of your own original content

don’t be afraid to add additional content to posts (add say YouTube video by hand to an amazon post

post a mixture of both content and products

not all posts have to be monetized

post something original you wrote each week (not generated by WP Robot at all

build backlinks and authority to your site slowly

create supporting “pages” in your wordpress site (that aren’t posts) with rich original content

never use the auto-created title, write your own for each autopost

View two autoposts I rewrote for my test site:
Engines of Sodor T-Shirt
My Thomas Videos

Conclusion

I can’t imagine anyone that wouldn’t benefit from this wonderful plugin. Just make sure you use it, and don’t abuse it! Like I said, you can buy as few or as many modules as you want – so you can’t say that this isn’t affordable, and you can use it for monetization OR content building purposes!

Even though this is billed as an “autoposting” plugin, I can honestly say that’s not why I wanted to use it. I set my keywords to create one post per day – and then I know I have to go and rewrite and “publish” them. I don’t have to find products to review anymore, or come up with content ideas AT ALL! I just login to my dashboard, go to my “drafts” – and there they are just waiting for me! Some days it took as long (or longer) to find something to write and blog about – as it did to write and monetize a post! Now – I don’t have to worry about that anymore! Click here to visit the official WP Robot web site. I hope you enjoy this plugin as much as I do!

Are you interested in an “Online Marketing Internship”? Read my story, and then in you’re interested in becoming an intern for a successful online web site – apply below!

One year ago I was working at Ford Motor company IT and my boss came to my desk and told me that my last day would be at the end of the year. I was a programmer and content management expert and it was the end of my tenth year working at Ford. Ford, like many companies in the area where I live, South of Detroit, Michigan – had been cutting back for several years. You’ve probably seen in the news the state of the auto industry in the US. What you may not know is that it’s not just factory workers they’re letting go, it’s engineers, programmers, project managers, server admins, database experts, and web designers as well. What this means for me is that in my market there are 15-20,000+ technical people out of work that can do what I do. Recruiters I have met with tell me of potential candidates for have doctorate degrees in computer science willing to work for $30-40,000/yr just to have a job.

Luckily for me, during the 10 years I worked in the corporate environment, I had a passion for learning about blogging and making money online. I probably spend as many hours at night working on web sites as I did my day job, and worked full time on the weekends for myself. I became an expert in Wordpress themes and plugins, and learned SEO and social marketing from the ground up. My personal web sites had always been for me, a hobby, a sideline, and it was never important if the money came in or not because I had a regular paycheck and benefits. I did make money each and every month, but sometimes it was $1,600/mo and sometimes it was $5,600/mo. I jumped from project to project, idea to idea, I was never very focused – because I didn’t have to be.

Earlier this year when I was first unemployed it still for some reason wasn’t completely apparent what I should do. I guess I somehow still held out hope that there would be a job somewhere for me. When you have had a regular paycheck for 10 years, and you know exactly how much money you’re going to get on what day – you get used to that consistency and security. You depend on it, and without a regular paycheck – you panic, like someone free falling without a parachute. I still jumped from project to project when I was unemployed while both my money and time ran out – literally!

One sunny day I had an idea that I should put my expertise to use online rather than just try “make money online” 150 different ways. I had skills in programming, web design, SEO, project management, marketing – and I used that experience to seek out clients to do freelance work. Within 6 weeks I was doing billable work every day of the week! My clients range from small businesses to corporatations, from dentists and doctors, to affiliate marketers, e-commerce stores, and niche store owners.

In a way – working with clients was the best thing that ever happened to me. It forced me to do for them, what I never could seem to do for myself. On my own working online for fun for many years I was always looking for “the next best thing” to make money. I was like a mexican jumping bean going from one project to the next. I had all the necessary experience to be successful full time on my own – but I never put the pieces of the puzzle all together.

From th 150+ clients I’ve had in the last 8-9 months, what I’ve learned is that they all pretty much had the same end goal no matter what their business. Whether their budget was $500 or $5,000 – the questions were always the same:

“How do we get found more in search engines?”
“What keywords do we use?”
“What is SEO and how do we use it”?
“How do we use social media?”
“How do we increase the ROI on our company web site?”
“How do we find people looking to buy products like ours online?”

The difference between working for a client and working for myself is that client work forces me to focus on their web site and products. No longer could I jump around from thing to thing because I had to get their job done or I wouldn’t get paid. I also found that no matter how big or small the business, I could apply nearly the same exact process and principles for them to be more successful online. I not only developed a pattern for working with clients, I developed specific “Phases” and modules to teach them what I was doing as I went.

At the end of the summer I started to apply the same principles and techniques I used on clients to some of my longstanding personal web sites with outstanding success! I had finally developed a plan for success online that worked! I’m at the point now where I’m ready to employ these successful techniques on 4 new concept sites that will be guaranteed money makers within 6 months of launch. I cannot do this on my own, and while my business is growing rapidly – I’d rather not take on new full time employees just yet.

What I want is people that are HUNGRY! Hungry for knowledge, hungry to learn what it takes to make money online from someone that has that experience! I remember back in high school they had a business club that was called “Junior Achievement”. You paired up with an experienced businessman and brainstormed a new product. It was your job to figure out how to get in manufactured, how much it would cost, what the profit would be, and how to market it. The businessman helped you through the process, and once 100 were made – you went out and sold whatever your product was. At the end of the project you got to keep 25% of the profits and the rest went back to the club.

Internships are usually unpaid, very few actually give you money. You put in your time for the privilege of gaining experience you can use to be successful in the future. What I’m about to offer is the deal of a lifetime. I’m now accepting applications for 4 Online Marketing Internship positions with JTPratt.com. This is a full time position, but you will be able to work from your own home at your own pace – but you will be expected to work at least 40 hours per calendar week.

**UPDATE Nov 2009** This article was originally written 3/28/2008, and it was definitely time to update it. Article Marketing is still alive and well, and it’s about time you took advantage of this little hidden gem that could help to put your blog on top of the search results!

Building Quality Backlinks is easy when you follow my diy tutorial guide on how to promote your blog or web site with article directories!

There are tons of ways to promote your web site and blog, and I outline quite a few of them in my Link Building Cheat Sheet. In this guide we’re going to focus on the art of “article marketing”, or submitting original content to article directories in exchange for promotion and free linkbuilding.

What is an Article Directory?

An article directory is a repository for people who write content. But it’s not a web site for “budding writers” per se. It’s for people who have something to promote. It’s a “quid quo pro” (this for that) arrangement. The owner of the article directory needs content to draw visitors. You need to build links across the web to get better search rankings so you can get traffic to your web site or blog. If you write quality content and follow their guidelines and rules, the article directories will let you publish there. And at the end of each article you can put a short bio as author, and include 3 or 4 links to landing pages of your choice. That’s the exchange. In addition, article directories allow anyone to “republish” the content as long as the title, body, and links are kept intact. So in addition to getting links in the article diretory in exchange for your content, you also get them across the web if many sites republish your articles as well.

Article Directory Rules and Guidelines

There are hundreds of article directories across the web that you can submit your articles to, and each one has it’s own rules and guidelines. I’m going to go over the most important things you should know about submitting articles to one of the more reputable and well known article directories EzineArticles.com.

EzineArticles.com is one of the most well known aticle directories on the web. They have a google pagerank or 6 and an Alexa rating of 143. Not bad for an article directory to be in the top 200 web sites online! Any one can sign up for membership – it’s free. They get hundreds of thousands of visitor’s per day, and all the articles are read and approved by hand by living breathing editors. There is a list of very important things you need to know before submitting your first article:

You must be 100% sole author of the content you submit

You cannot use any direct affiliate links. You can direct readers to your site and give them an affiliate link there, but not directly in an article

No public domain or “private label rights” content

Must have proper English grammer, spelling, and punctuation

Nothing obscene or adult can be used

Cannot contain content that violates the law or is libelous in any way

Cannot be a duplicate of content you already submitted

Must not contain excessive bold keyword and phrases, bolding is limited to headings and subheadings

Must be unique and share your expertise, like tips, strategies, techniques, analysis, opinions and commentary

You cannot use more than 5 lines of quoted or sourced material

In addition to those basic rules (most of which are common sense) there are some “formatting” rules as well you need to know:

You can’t use all caps in your article title

You can’t use quotes in your title

You can’t end your title with a period

You can’t use excessive punctuation, you get one ! or ? at a time

You can’t use your web site name or URL in a title

Titles must be two unique words or more

Your author name must be your actual name

Articles must be at least 250 words, but less than 5,000 words

Do not repeat your article title in the article body

Copyrights must be at the bottom of the article

The article body must deliver what is promised in the article title

Too much blatant self promotion (in the body) and the article will be tossed

The HTML tags you can use are pretty basic for formatting only: bold, italic, underline, pre, ol, ul, and li

Everything else is not allowed, such as Javascript, images, font size colors and changes, H heading tags, or the HR horizontal rule

How to submit articles

The first time I submitted an article I made the mistake of using quotes in the title. It also had a bunch of URL’s in the body (I didn’t know you couldn’t do that). Then they made me remove the excessive bold and italics I had, and then I think finally it went through. The next article I submitted was rejected because it sounded to much “like a blog post”. I had to rewrite it and remove references eluding to other posts and parts of my blog. I got nailed once for inadvertantly using an affiliate link, and another time because I linked to my own blog in the body of the article when it should have been in the footer. I’ve had some articles only have one problem I need to revise before it was approved, and others have 6 different revisions. I seem to learn something every time I submit, and the last so many I’ve submitted have sailed right through.

My basic advice to you is to put a lot of thought into your articles. Make them keyword rich in both the titles and the body, and use good linkbait in the title and the first few sentences of the body. Write compelling, authoritative, detailed articles of at least 500-1,000+ words. I’ve read so many articles that were just utter crap. A good example was when I was looking for some good mobile or cell phone articles, and the only ones I seemed to find were trash that just reiterated the spec sheet of a phone and how hip and cool it was. There was no opinion, no real world experience, and absolutely nothing to lead me to believe that the author was an expert in much of anything. These are articles with no real value.

EzineArticles has also been cracking down on what they call “derivitave content”. That’s where you rehash an article and turn it into many different versions just for the purpose of submitting to the directory. You don’t want this, they have derivitave content filters in place now to find these articles and remove them from the directory. In addition, they found that 90% of the derivitave content they found was only 300-400 words and poor quality.

I want to take this opportunity (once again) to remind you that you’re building a “brand”. You want someone to read your article and think “wow – they really know what the hell they’re talking about, I want to read more by them…”. Don’t think of article submission as an opportunity to just “build links”. It’s an entire online marketing mission to show people how strong your “brand” really is. You building a reputation as an author that will compell readers to want to read your byline and find out what else you have to offer. You have an opportunity to do this from both the Ezine Articles site, but also from all the sites that republish your content. And the better your content is – the more sites that will want to republish it.

It isn’t easy to make sure your article contains all the elements required for success. But, as usual – I will give you a checklist to consider:

Before submission your article should:

Conform to the article directory guidelines

Contain a keyword rich catchy (but not lengthy) title enticing readers to click and publishers to want to republish you

Have a body that begins with a keyword rich 2-3 sentence synopsis of what the article is about and what makes it useful

Be very detailed and compelling tip, tutorial, opinion, analysis, technique, or strategy outlining your expertise

Be straighforward giving detailed action points readers can put into use

Have a very subtle hook towards the end compelling people to read your bio (which could be as simple as “to see all the pictures/audio/video associated with the original version of this article click here)

Contain a very well thought out bio with at least 3-4 keyword laden links leading to important landing pages you need to direct traffic to

Contain enough keywords and linkbait (on a popular topic) to entice many site owners to republish your article

What to Expect from Article Directory Promotion

EzineArticle 3/2008 stats

All in all I have been very pleased with Article Directory promotion and what it’s done for me. When I originally wrote this post over a year and a half ago – I’d only been using it for 6 weeks. The image to the left shows that for my 20 submitted articles to EzineArticles.com at the time over 2,500 people had read them. I had thought that was great since I’ve viewed many author profiles that have 4-5,000 views for 10 or less articles over the last 3-4 years. My 2,500+ views had been in less than 2 months. The stats say that 65 people have click my footer links back to one of my web sites, but more importantly my articles have been published 56 times. With at least 3 links in each footer, that means I built at least 150 backlinks to my sites – and that’s in addition to the original 60 backlinks in the footers right here on Ezine Articles. One time someone has emailed my article to a friend, and two people have “voted” for my articles (5 stars – w00t!).

EzineArticles 11/2009 stats

Now let’s see what the stats are 18 months later! Wow! My stats have really grown! 193 articles published, 90,000+ article views – I’d say this was a pretty good investment of my time! And in my opinion, when you build these kinds of links they normally have a longer shelf-life than regular blog comments.

Now, a year and a half later – time has shown how effective of a tool that was. The SERP’s for the links I built improved driving even more traffic to my site(s). I can give you a real world example of how it helped at least one of my sites right off the bat. On Feb 22nd, I submitted The Best Blonde Jokes as my 5th article to Ezine Articles. Under “Author Tools” in your profile, Ezine Articles provides some more detailed stats on everything you’ve published. It’s here where you can get numbers on the individual articles themselves. I checked for this article, and to date it’s been republished only 2 times. But those two times and the article here on Ezine Articles must’ve done something – because a very low activity web site I built the links for with this article came back to life from the grave. Check out these stats from my Wordpress dashboard:

My site Top Jokes rarely got more than 100 views per day (usually 10-20) and about a week after publishing the blonde joke article it came alive again out of the blue. I have nothing to attribute this growth to except for that lone article submission. I can’t say that this will happen every time for every article you submit and build links for, but over time your bound to have more success than failure.

It’s Easier Than You Think

You’re probably thinking that writing completely original content just to submit to article directories is a very tedious and time consuming task! You’re right! However, you can use existing articles you’ve already written on your own blog or web site and submit them to Ezine Articles and other article directories. I’ve done this personally for a very long time, and there have been detractors that have screamed “duplicate content!” from the highest hill – and yet it has not affected me one Iota.

If you don’t believe me, read these quotes from the last Ezine Articles newsletter I received from article directory owner Christopher M. Knight:

“Let me be clear: You SHOULD submit existing articles and content from your web site or blog”

“Repackaging Existing Articles On Your Website Now and Submitting Them To EzineArticles Does NOT Trigger Our Derivative Content Filters”

“Find a New Audience by Submitting Your Existing Content AND Your Brand New, Original Articles to EzineArticles.com”

It couldn’t be any clearer than that – could it?

Where else can I submit Articles?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Personally I only submit articles to Ezine Articles, GoArticles.com, and ArticleBlast.com. Actually, the last so many I’ve done I’ve gotten REALLY lazy with and only submitted to Ezine Articles, but I really should follow up and submit to the other 2 as well. GoArticles is really lax with their submissions, it’s almost a free for all, and articles are published immediately when you click “submit”. Article Blast has at least a few basic requirements, but it’s very easy to submit to as well.

Here’s a list of the top 20 article directories according to Alexa ranking and pagerank. Of course, you want to stay away from any of the ones that are NF! or that nofollow your links in the author byline box (rendering them useless). If you want the full list, visit the Top 50 list of article directories – that’s where I took this top 15 list from.

Automated Article Submission?

Use that list wisely. Whatever you do, don’t get sucked into one of these hairbrained schemes (software or service) that spams your article to hundreds (or god-forbid thousands!) of directories at once. Look – you’re practically spamming your content if you do that and just plain devalueing it as well. Don’t write your own google penalty. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, stick to submitting what you can manage and and handle by hand – don’t go automated.

How Many Articles Should I Submit?

This is the one well most people fall flat – and I have to admint that I haven’t taken advantage of article marketing nearly as much as I should have in the last year and a half. I only have 38 articles listed in EzineArticles , and I should have a minimum of 150. That’s about 2 a week. Let me illustrate the difference between success and mediocrity with article marketing. I read a post a few months back about the most successful diet program on Clickbank which had paid more than 12 million in commissions in a single calendar year. Out of 2,600 affiliates the top 30 earned nearly all the commissions for that year. When asked about their promotional methods, every single one had utilized article marketing and all had published from 150-500+ articles each. That’s a lot of work, but that’s also a lot of commission! It’s the difference between success and failure, and why usually only a small percentage of affiliates in any program or network make the bulk of the commissions.

If you have success promoting your web site or blog because of my “Guide to Article Marketing” – I’d like to hear about it. Have a question? Same thing – please comment now below!

Since I first wrote about the FTP blogging rules for endorsements, I’ve read some interesting posts on other blogs about it. Shoemoney held a “town hall chat” with John Chow and other bloggers, and he talks about it in his post What you don’t know about the new FTC rules on Disclosure. He basically thinks that the fake news sites and obvious guru bad guys (lying about income and results to make sales) will be made a into a scapegoat – one way or ther other. Those of us using affiliate links and being honest probably won’t be affect at all.

It’s interesting to see Matt Cutts’ put up a page about disclosure too. His basically says that he’s a google employee, he owns google stock, he doesn’t take any free gifts or money (even travel expenses to conferences). I guess you have to say that if you’re an employee blogger. It’s kind of the reverse of someone disclosing they make money or how the endorse something.

In the spirit of things, I’ve created my own disclosure page. Check it out. If you review or endorse anything online (or make money online and blog about it), AND you live in the U.S. – you should probably create your own disclosure page.

Does Google Hate Datafeedr? Seems like kind of a weird question doesn’t it? For some reason believe it or not – that exact search phrase was in my top 10 results yesterday. There seems to be a lot of people googling for information related to that – probably because there’s been a lot of google penalties and de-indexing going around regarding datafeedr Wordpress affiliate stores.

I wrote a series late last year called “How to Build an Affiliate Store in Wordpress“. In that series, if you read all the articles – I was very specific about both creating original content AND how if you didn’t you would run the risk of a google penalty.

What is a google Penalty?

If you have a web site, it’s ranked in google on a ‘pagerank’ scale of 1-10. The higher your number, the greater your authority, the more searches you come up for, the more traffic you get, the more money you make. Google likes web sites and blogs with original content. Google likes stores with original content that sell their own products. Google hates affiliates that get a datafeed or some links and build an online store with no content and scraped or copied content just for the purpose of making affiliate commissions. To google you’re no better than a scalper or spammer. Google doesn’t mind if you have a site with original content where you link to, review, or suggest products – AS LONG AS your products DON’T OVERWHELM your content. If it does google calls you a “thin affiliate” site – heavy on affiliate links, and light on content.

IF Google finds you (and some sites go years without getting caught for some reason) to be a ‘thin affiliate’, any number of things could happen:

You could get banned from adsense (if you use it on that site), or at least get your ads pulled from displaying on that site

You could lose pagerank

You could become “unranked” or pagerank zero

You could remain ranked, but not show up in search results

You could be unranked, appear in search results, but get no traffic

You could could be temporarily (or permanently) removed from google search results altogether (deindexed)

You could receive any of the above for 30, 60, 90, or 120 days – or even up to one year

I have received EVERY SINGLE ONE of the above penalties over the last 2 years on one of my web sites, and ALL OF THEM are now back on the google index and in good standing.

How do I keep My datafeedr affiliate store (or any site) from getting a google penalty?

If you have a datafeedr affiliate store in Wordpress my advice to you is this. In your robots.txt file set your store URL to disallow indexing. Nofollow all links to your store. In your google XML Sitemap plugin setup enter your store URL to NOT be included in your sitemap. If you have been deindexed in google – request reinclusion and state that you have an affiliate store and set it up not to be indexed – only your original content (and you should get back in).

Don’t try and cheat google – and you won’t get the shaft, plain and simple. DO NOT RELY on a piss poor product store to get organic results and traffic in google to make you money. Rather – create a GREAT site with AWESOME original content and let IT DRAW the traffic, which will naturally visit your store (and make you money).

Why has MY datafeedr store FAILED?

I get this every now and again. 99% of the time a datafeedr store fails because a site or blog is centered around it. I have had clients in the past ask me to setup a datafeedr store, and then THEY DO NOTHING WITH IT, and wonder why they made no money. This is ONLY ok when you’re going to send paid traffic or do Adwords PPC to the datafeedr store. If you want to be indexed in google – you have to do all the normal things you would have to do for any site to be promoted online. Write content. Gain subscribers. Build Links. Get Authority. Get traffic. Make Money.

If you’re just looking to throw up a store and wait for the buckets of money to roll in…sorry. That doesn’t work in the real world – why the hell would it work online?
