I hope my helpful WP plugins for content and layout are handy for you as they have been for me! I was writing out some lesson posts for my Online Marketing Interns, and had to list out some plugins that would help them that they may not have used yet. I’m not a big fan of having tons of Wordpress plugins installed. Plugins can have conflicts with other plugins. They can slow down your blog. Every time Wordpress loads it has to check ALL plugins in the plugin diretory (whether activated or not) just to see which ones are on. Next it has to filter through each active one just to see if it has to do something before it renders a page. If your blog is slow, deactivate all plugins and see how much faster it is. Then reactivate them one by one to see which one is the culprit.

Having said all that, I usually can’t get away with less than 12-18 plugins installed per site. My main site has almost 3 dozen+ plugins installed at any given time. I’m going to give you some additional plugins that can really help you organize and plan and maintain your blog, just realize your mileage may vary – and only install the ones you think you will REALLY use. Don’t be the guy that installs everything just to check it out, and then just leaves them all installed. Wordpress itself only has 13 database tables on a default install. Sometimes plugins create their own database tables for their options and data. I once had a client that had 48 database tables for his wordpress site because of all the plugin he installed over the years, half of which he was no longer using.

Backend Plugins

Broken Link Checker: I don’t use this in all my sites, but over time links get broken and this plugin can help. It monitors when people click on links going outside your site that are broken, and broken images. You get notified in the dashboard when you have a broken link. If nothing more, this plugin is handy because if you have affiliate links anywhere on your site and they break, this plugin will tell you the next time you login to the dashboard.

Pending Review: If you have people writing and submitting content for your review, or if you’re scheduling posts for your review later – this will give you a list in the dashboard.

Dashboard Scheduled Posts: This plugin lists your scheduled posts, great if you’re using WP Robot or datafeedr to stack up posts for you to rewrite and publish. I believe the current 2.9 WP dashboard shows you recent drafts, I don’t know how that compares to this.

Scheduled Posts Calendar: Maybe you have posts scheduled for the month and you’re more of a visual person. This plugin provides a calendar and shows all of your scheduled posts throughout the month.

Cross Linker: Cross Linker is a great plugin because it boost your blog “inlinks” automatically. Let’s say you are selling an ebook with a custom workout. Add the keyword “workout” in crosslinker and the page you want it to go to on your site. Then every time you use the word “workout” in a post it will automatically link your landing page. You just give the plugin a list of words and pages you want it to cross link, and it will do all the work for you.

Go Codes: Need to add an affiliate link, and you want to track how many times people click on it and you don’t want everyone to see your crazy referral code and URL? Ever wonder how everyone else is doing it? Go Codes! Enter what you want the redirect to be, and what the affiliate URL is, and whether you want it tracked or not and voila! you get site.com/go/link!

Layout Plugins

Privacy Page: Honestly you really don’t need a plugin for this – you could (and should) create this page on your own. Try the plugin, see what it generates, and then copy the text and make your own privacy page, and deactivate and remove the plugin, lol. Why do you need a privacy page? Adsense, eBay, and nearly every affiliate program out there requires that your have one to promote their products.

Breadcrumb NavXT: I’ve been creating and maintaining web sites for 15 years, and I still don’t understand why Wordpress and most modern CMS system don’t have better navigation. If google isn’t a clue, EVERY SINGLE PAGE on your web site should have what we call “breadcrumbs” at the top. It gives visitors a way “home” at all times and it shows where they are in your site (if you have multiple levels or sub-pages). Users expect that. The biggest sites have it – why shouldn’t you? There is NOTHING wrong with having redundant navigation in your header, sidebars, footer, and breadcrumbs – so long as it doesn’t clutter your site and make it more confusing.

WP PageNavi: The last thing your blog needs is to have those nasty “previous” and “next” post links on your homepage and single post pages. Lester Chan’s WP PageNavi plugin adds a bottom page navigation more like google’s. This doesn’t work automatically – you have to edit your wordpress home or index.php and single.php theme files on your own.

Subscribe to Comments: If you haven’t already, install and activate the “Subscribe to Comments” plugin. When I comment on a site if I can’t “subscribe” to any replies to my comment, I just get really annoyed.

Customizing Your Theme

One thing that many wordpress web site owners don’t do is much more than create blog posts or an about page. I’ve written articles about the main things you should understand about your Wordpress site(s) and customizing or creating main theme pages. I advise you start here first: Hacking Wordpress Template Files

And then work your way through these:

Fixing Categories: 9 things you can do with Categories

The SEO Booster Pro plugin for Wordpress can help you boost your rankings a little bit in the SERPs, and it saves you time by automating a few processes you might normally do by hand (or not do at all). There’s nothing black or grey hat about it, although people tend to be confused about whether they should be using a plugin like this at all – and whether or not it will “piss off” google enough to get you a penalty in the index or not.

Search Engine Basics

Search engines send your traffic based on a multitude of factors – ranging from authority, to pagerank, the power of your backlinks, the amount of your backlinks – and even the sites you’re associated with. When someone types in a search google attempts to give it’s “best match” of relevant original contet results. Sometimes the results are people that actually “targeted” and tried to come up for that search, and other times it’s just a bunch of pages that accidentally ranked for that result. Did you know that 60% of all searches entered in google have never been entered before? That’s because more and more people are treating it like a question and answer portal and asking it a query as if google were some magical oracle.

Linkbuilding Basics

Even if you were smart enough to find and target keyword phrases for your site, over time you end up getting ranked for all kinds of “long tail” searches and broad match terms you never thought about. Simply linking to your own internal pages, or creating your own “inlinks” (deep linking) can often times be enough to change your SERPs for some keywords from say the 2-5th page of google results to the first page! Just tagging complementary pages with the same tag can be enough. Linking a page or post in your sidebar dramatically help as well.

Enter SEO Booster Pro…

SEO Booster Pro is a premium Wordpress plugin that costs $39.95, and it’s purpose is very simple – to help you do better in the SERPs. It doesn’t do anything you can’t do on your own manually, and it shouldn’t raise the ire of google in any way. Once you install it, it monitors your incoming search queries. So far it’s captured results on 31,000 incoming searches for this blog.

You can view the top 10 incoming searches, it records the SERP page, your position on the page, what they keywords were, and which page it’s ranked for:

It also records the last 35 SERP visits. This is pretty handy, as it records the last top 35 that came in – and it really shows you that nearly all your incoming traffic comes from the first page of google results. You also get the total visits and the landing page they went to, but I think the handiest thing is the fact that you also get the link to the google results page in case you want to see what other sites were listed for that search, etc.

It has some very interesting settings. You can choose what SERP positions you want to try to boost higher, and how often you should run the cron job so the plugin can do it’s work:

It has some nice auto-tagging features as well. It can tag posts with phrases you might want to boost your search ranking for, and all the related posts as well. If you want, it can even re-write your post titles with incoming search phrases. The plugin creates a long and extensive log of everything it does, it will show you the last search positions it researched for you, and any rankings that have changed.

In addition to the tagging, it also has a widget functionality that you can use to put keywords in your sidebar (you choose how many) which helps your inlinks and boosts your SERPs as well.

Conclusion

SEO Booster Pro can help you get better search rankings, but the level of reporting and analysis you can get in just a few minutes (without digging through data in google analytics or some other stats) is awesome. There’s nothing grey hat about it, it’s not wrong to use it, you could create your own inlinks yourself to do the same thing (many people do). In my opinion, spending $39.95 one time (free lifetime upgrades) is well worth the money in the time alone it saves me – let alone the increased incoming traffic I’ll get from using it.

*Disclaimer: I’m an affiliate for SEO Booster Pro, and if you buy it from the link below I get a commission. That’s how we pay the bills around here!

“How to SEO” is one of the most frequently asked questions I get. The majority of the work I do on a daily basis for clients is SEO work. I can’t teach you everything about SEO in one blog post. In addition – in the future I’m putting together some eBook products that will have step by step instructions for “DIY SEO” and I don’t want to give all my secrets away. I can however, give you a great overview of how you can quickly SEO your blog posts, and that alone will put you light years ahead of most of the other web sites online.

How to do Keyword Research

Some of you may be reading this and thinking – I thought this post was “How to SEO”, what’s with the Keyword Research How to? One of my pet peeves is that some web sites and blogs teach SEO without keyword research. SEO is optimizing a web site for search engines. But how do you know which keywords to optimize for? Some clients I have crack me up because they “think” they know the right keywords to target. Little do they know the keyword phrases they picked only get 5 searches a month (*lol).

Every time you put up a web page or write a blog post you’re making a deposit in the search engines. Whether it pays you back at 0.3% interest or 20% is up to you. Just a little simple research before you hit “publish” can be the difference between making money or not. I’m going to show you how to figure that out. Get to know the Google Keyword Research Tool. Bookmark it, it’s your friend and you should visit it often.

I’m writing this post about posting on one of my other blogs The Smorgasbord. I’ve had that blog since 1999 (in one form or another), and today I’m writing a post about wireless routers. I post all kinds of things to that site (technology related), but this particular post was written with the intent to make money. It’s a review post, which is a great opportunity to link to products using affiliate links. What I’m going to do is throw all my product names and the best keywords from my article (that’s not published yet) into the google keyword research tool.

Here’s an image of my results:

How to Do Keyword Research 1

What google does is give you a list of keywords (and suggestions) with the average number of searches per month last month (first column) and average globally per month (second column). With this (free) tool you can easily pick select keywords to use throughout your blog post or web page. I usually enter a few keywords to get started, and in this example I entered my 3 products I’m reviewing. First the product name, and then again the product name with “review”. I also entered terms to look for a good title like “wireless n router review”, etc.

Now again – I can’t teach you everything about SEO in one blog post, but you usually want to choose a keyword phrase that’s more than 1,000 search per month (3,000+ is better), but less than 100,000. Over 100,000 the terms can be harder to compete for, and what people are looking for can be more broad and vague. There are exceptions of course, like when a product is new – and doesn’ t have many search yet and want to beat the market and get indexed on top right now.

How to SEO a blog post

After a little research, I chose 4 different keyword phrases to target on my example page. I chose “dual band wireless router” for the title because that phrase gets 60,500 searches per month. I’m glad I didn’t just make the title what I thought was best, since I might have called it “Dual Band Wireless N router review”. All 4 keywords would still have been in the title, but “diluted”. They are more powerful when in the right order.

I took the other 3 keyword phrases and placed them in html header tags above each product paragraph. I write the text of my article, and page introduction to be SEO friendly. The most important part, however, is my SEO plugin All in One SEO pack. With this plugin installed, under the content box in any page or post in Wordpress you can write custom HTML titles for posts, and add custom meta descriptions and keyword tags.

How to Use All in One SEO Pack Plugin

Above you can see how I added the keywords I chose in the HTML title, meta description, and meta keywords tags.

How does Search Engine Indexing Work?

Most people have no idea how search engine indexing works. I’ll give you a brief overview. A search “crawler” (software robot) visits your site, and when it visits your pages it looks for an HTML title first. This is not the heading or text on your page. It’s an HTML “tag” called title, and Wordpress automatically populates your HTML title with the name of your post or page. That same post Title (in Wordpress) also becomes (depending on your theme) usually the heading title in the body of the page. This “title” is also the title of your search engine listing for that page. This is why it’s smart to use All in One SEO pack – you can customize the title (if you want) to have one HTML title (for the search engines) and another (heading title) for readers. **Make a mental note, search engines can’t use more than 75 characters or so, writing titles longer than that is a waste of time.

The next thing a search crawler looks for is a meta “description” tag. This is also an HTML tag, and it’s what a search crawler uses for your description in search engines when indexing pages. If you don’t have this tag, the search crawler just grabs the first text it finds on a page, even if it’s just navigation or menus.

A search engine listing is like an advertisement in the (online) phone book. The title and description are what entices somebody to click (or not). Here’s an example, check out this this page in the HP online store. Now, I’m going to google that exact same page to see what the listing for it is:

How to SEO google results

See how the title is good, but the description is a bunch of gobbledy-gook? In their defense, HP actually had a description tag for this page, but they had some bad code turn it into this. It’s still a good example of what can happen when you don’t have a meta description tag.

Here’s another example, check out the latest post on ProBlogDesign.com. I want you to see this one because, this site actually has All in One SEO pack installed – but google isn’t using the meta description written for the post at all.

Here’s the listing in google for that page:

How to SEO Google Results 2

It kind of looks like the google crawler took some random text from the top of the page for the description of this page in search results – doesn’t it? First of all – I know better, Michael runs one of the best blogs about blogging online – he wouldn’t “not” have an SEO plugin installed. I checked the HTML source code of that page I googled from his blog and I see that he does in fact have a meta description – but it’s uber-long. Most search engines use a maximum of 160 characters for the description. I think google might have an algorithm to detect if you try and use too many words, because the meta tag for this page is 727 characters long:

meta name=”description” content=”One of the most important elements of your blog, is the content that you painstakingly put together to gain readers and keep the online masses surfing your waves. So why do so many bloggers not take the extra time and give more attention to their archives? Afterall, without an easy to navigate archive section, then all of that great content that you crafted will become lost in the backpages of your post progression as you continue to crank out the content. It seems that once a post has served its initial use for us, that we carelessly discard it to the forgotten areas for the post to die, rather than institute an accessible archive that will allow those past posts to continue to deliver the punch you packed within.”

Why the google crawler didn’t just use the first 160 characters of that is beyond me – but this is pure proof (in my mind) that you should stick to 160 characters of less at all times in your meta description (or google may just ignore it). I’m not going to comment a lot about the meta “keywords” tag, other than some hotly debate whether this tag even does any good anymore. What I can say is this…in my experience if you choose to “SEO” a page, here’s a little checklist:

Target 4 or less keywords phrases

Use your main keyword phrase in the title

Make your title under 75 characters

Use your keywords in the description and your keywords tag

Make your description less than 160 characters

Use your Keywords in headings in page content

For best results have your page content be 400 words+

Make sure your keywords aren’t more than 30% of the content

Try not to repeat specific keywords more than 3-4 times per page

Of course there’s a LOT more to it than this, but this is enough to get you started. Believe me, it’s more than 95% of the web sites and blogs online do. If you want to read the post I was writing on my other blog as the example here, read my Dual Band Wireless router post.

There are literally hundreds of ways to customize your post order and the way that they are listed in “the loop” on your Wordpress pages. You can change they way they’re displayed on your home page, post pages, paged pages, tag or category pages, search results page, or custom theme pages!

This post is part of my 30 Wordpress Hacks in 30 Days series!

Most Wordpress themes display full posts for the blog homepage. When Wordpress shows your homepage it looks for a file called “home.php” in your theme directory – and if it doesn’t find that it uses “index.php” instead. Look for home.php in your theme directory, if it’s not there edit index.php using “Appearance->Editor” in your wordpress dashboard admin.

Look for the following line of code:

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

This is where “the loop” starts. A little further down you’ll find a line of code like this:

<?php the_content(__('Read the rest of this entry...')); ?>

It may look a little different but you will find a line with the_content. Just change the_content to the_excerpt like this (and save), and your homepage will show excerpts instead of full posts. If you change the text “Read the rest of this entry…”, you can customize what it says at the end of the excerpt.

By default Wordpress posts are displayed from newest to oldest. Let’s say you want them to be in reverse order from oldest to new. I need this recently for a page of lessons – and I wanted them to display from the first lesson to the last. All you have to do is add one line of code just before “the loop” like this:

<?php query_posts($query_string . "&order=ASC") ?>

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

Maybe you want to show more or less posts per page (the default is 10). You could use code like this before “the loop”:

query_posts(‘posts_per_page=5′);

<?php query_posts('posts_per_page=5') ?>

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

Maybe you want to order your posts alphabetically – you could use code like this:

<?php $posts=query_posts($query_string . '&orderby=title&order=asc'); ?>

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

If you have an multi-author site you could use code like this to get posts for specific authors:

<?php $posts=query_posts($query_string . '&author_name=neo'); ?>

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

Remember that you can use this code in any wordpress theme page to change the order or display of posts, like your single.php, page.php, index.php, home.php, search.php, archive.php, etc.

I just got an email from a guy through my contact form who said he saw two versions of one of my articles – one on another site, and one on this one. He gave me the URL. The other site isn’t mine, it’s a scraper site (not unusual). I guess the thing that made me maddest was the fact that he stole the entire article, stripped out my affiliate links and replaced them with a banner and his link, and he’s even linking to the images in my original blog post sucking down my bandwidth for his spam activities!

The post in question is my Artisteer review How to Create YourOwn Wordpress Theme in Minutes. This was a post that took many hours to write. So, the first thing I did was find out where he was hosted (theplanet.com). First I should tell you what you have to do if you’re in this situation. Go to a site like Network Tools. Do an nslookup on the spammer’s site, as well as a traceroute, and last a “whois” query. Two out of the 3 didn’t tell me anything. The nslookup came back blank – because he’s a spammer and he turned it off. The whois query came back that he was regsitered through an anonymous web service, also no help. But the every trustworth “traceroute” can’t be turned off! And guess what – his site traces back to theplanet.com hosting on American soil! That little bastard is now worthy of a DMCA takedown to get his site offline ASAP! If you ever need to do this read my post: How to Submit a DMCA Takedown Notice

So, I realize that it may take a short bit of time for theplanet.com to respond to my request through their legal department – so since this little stupid spammer is sucking off of MY bandwidth using MY original images – I decided to fix his little red wagon once and for all. I could have just renamed all the images in the article and deleted the original ones. But I went one better than that. I renamed the images, and then I uploaded a nice version of the original for his viewers to read as soon as my article loads on his site:

Sorry spammers – this round you lose!

Have you ever needed to reset your admin account password in Wordpress?

wp_users table

Maybe you have one too many blogs, or one of your friends or clients locked themselves out of their WP blog and they need to have the password reset? I myself, have had many instances where upgrading a wordpress site or moving from one domain or web host to another left my admin account not able to login. In any event, no matter what the problem I’m going to show y ou how to reset the password on any account in a Wordpress web site. The process is very simple and painless, even if you’re non-technical you should be able to follow the images to do this.

To be able to get this done you need to have access to your web control panel for your hosting account and the ability to access the MySQL datbase tool “PhpMyAdmin”. So login to your web control panel, and find the PhpMyAdmin link and click on it. On the left hand side click on your wordpress database (or select it from a dropdown) and a list of tables should appear in the left sidebar. Go all the way to the botom and click on the “wp_users” table.

In the screen that appears in the right frame it will default to “structure”. You need to click on the tab to the left of that “browse”

phpmyadmin default table view

Once you click on browse you’ll get a listing of the wordpress accounts for your blog. Just click the pencil (edit) button beside the account you want to reset or change the password for:

Edit user account Wordpress

Next the screen that comes up will show you the details of that account. Notice in the image below that the password fields is scrambled characters:

Wordpress reset admin password

All you have to do is clear out the scrambled characters in the user_pass field, and then click on the dropdown field to the left and select “MD5″ for encryption.

How to reset wordpress password

Once you do this, just click “go” in the bottom right corner and voila! You’ve updated the password manually for a Wordpress account! If you have multiple accounts to rest passwords for, go back and repeat the process.

Have you ever wanted to change your Wordpress web site or blog URL to an IP address, subdirectory, or new domain name? Why would you want to do this? Well, maybe you want to move to a new domain name. Maybe you want to setup a test or development version of Wordpress in a subdirectory, another server on an IP address, or a different URL while you test and make changes. How do you do this?

It’s pretty easy, in fact so easy – you might kick yourself. All you have to is add these 2 lines to your wp-config.php file:

define('WP_HOME','http://example.com');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com');

That worked for me! There are other fixes (like going into the database), but if the easy one works – why do something that requires more work? If that doesn’t work for you – check out these other options in the WP Codex.

Do you have a contact form installed on your web site? Some do, some don’t. I find many people don’t have one, or it’s in the wrong place, it’s hard to find, hard to use, or hard to read. First of all – let me tell you a little story. I maintain, fix, and create Wordpress web sites for a living. I own about 25 Wordpress web sites of my own, and I work on about a dozen+ client Wordpress web sites per week. Some are blogs, some niche and affiliate stores, many are for small business and corporate use.

If you have a Wordpress powered web site probably the most important page on your web site is your contact page. I’m a Wordpress consultant – and sometimes even I forget this. Case and point, I have one web site that gets 25,000 pageviews per day. Two days ago I got a post comment that said “I want to advertise on your site and have no way to contact you – please get ahold of me at this email”. doh! It was also a blog I’m not in every day and the comment was 3 WEEKS OLD! I was just lucky he was still interested when I contacted him, and it was a $400 advertising sale! Not having a contact form almost lost me a sale!

On another web site I had a contact form, but it was on my about page. I wanted to get approval to get my product on that web site listed on Clickbank – so I applied. They said I had to have a page called “Contact”, and I had to link to it from both my sales and features page. I did that, but I did one better – I placed the contact form in my sidebar as well. Guess what, within 48 hours I got 3 emails asking questions about the plugin (before they purchased). All 3 people that asked questions bought the product. Who knows how many other sales I lost by not having a contact form that was easy to find and use!

You have no idea how many people might want to contact you – or what for. Sometimes people want to trade or exchange links, some want to hire you, others want reviews, some want to buy advertising, some people just have a question. You never know, maybe some big corporation wants to buy you out (if your site is really popular). You NEED a contact form on your web site, and not having one (or having one that’s hard to find) is like not having a mailbox on the front of your house!

If a future post I’ll go over my favorite contact plugins details in depth, but for now here’s 2 links:

Contact Form 7: This contact form is lightweight, easy to use, and updated frequently. Many people are very happy with it, and it is popular.

Cforms II: Hands down – this is the best contact form plugin I’ve ever used. But it has TONS of features. If all you want is a single form with a name, email, and comment field – go back and use Contact Form 7. With Cforms II you can build anything from small forms to big surveys. It has a dozen+ styled forms (including one for the sidebar). It has a refer a friend feature, it can save form submissions in the database for review on a reports page later either in place of – or in addition to getting form results in email (which can fail). You can even have this plugin handle all the comments on your web site! It’s my favorite, but it’s a heavy duty plugin for heavy duty work!

Do you have a contact form on your web site?

Is your Wordpress theme broken? Learn how to troubleshoot exactly what the problem is in just a few minutes. My clients hire me as a Wordpress Consultant to fix their broken blogs, and many of them don’t have the technical ability to do it themselves, or they just don’t want to be bothered with these kinds of things when they could be concentrating on their work.

This post is part of my series Managing Wordpress More Effectively.

There are, however, thousands of people, some trying to make money online – and some just ordinary bloggers – who have no budget and are trying to figure things out on their own. This post is for you – if you’re trying to fix your own broken theme. These are actually the exact same steps I take when fixing blogs, in fact this blog had an issue for awhile now where when visitors clicked a search results to come here from google, only the header would load, and no content. Even reloading the page wouldn’t fix it. This only happenned from google or google reader, and all other visits to the site worked fine. Once I deactivate all plugins, and reactivated them one by one I figured out (by process of elimination) that the problem was with the “Psychic Search” plugin I had installed. Once I removed it, all the broken pages were fixed.

The first thing you should know is that Wordpress works great out of the box! If you’re current theme is broken, things aren’t displaying properly, pages aren’t fully loading, pages are not found or 404 error, or clicking or certain things breaks stuff – here are the steps you should take to get your theme working again.

 Deactivate all plugins. Reload your your blog page with the problem. Does it work now? Activate all your plugins one by one, reloading your blog page each time – and the one that breaks it is the problem (deactivate and delete it).

 With all plugins still deactivated – activate the “default” Wordpress theme. Does it work now? If so – you’ve hacked your theme and broken it. Try downloading a fresh copy (or just switching themes)

 Links to your own blog pages don’t work? Go to “Settings->Permalinks” and just hit “save” to update them again. Do they work now?

 Blank pages, blank Wordpress dashboard login – or can’t login: check your wp-config file first and make sure it’s there and has the right connection information. Reupload all the Wordpress core files again to see if one was corrupted, and check your theme page again.

 If you’re still having problems, the first thing I would do is to contact your web host and ask if there were any recent upgrades to the server you’re hosted on. Sometimes upgrades to apache or security rules can screw up Wordpress sites, and you might not be the only customer affected. If that’s not it, search the Wordpress Support Forum – there might be someone with the exact same problem as you, that has already found a solution!

98% of the time when your Wordpress theme breaks it’s something simple, and the steps above will get you back in business again. If you’re already in there mucking around with themes and plugins – I would also advise that you read my Wordpress Security Guide for DIY info on how to secure and harden your blog. If your Wordpress blog has been hacked and you need immediate help, follow that link for information on asking me for assistance.

Have you used the new Bing.com yet? I love me some google! But they say Bing.com is the fastest growing search engine. I guess it doesn’t hurt much that Microsoft is pushing a bucket of money at it either. Make that 10 buckets of money. Anyway, the weird thing about Bing is that in it’s quest to be King of the web it seems to be indexing everything in sight. I mean, even things that weren’t indexed in MSN Live Search. Case and point, I have a joke blog Top Jokes that’s been all but forgotten by Google, I think I pissed them off at one time or another and they banned that site for good. Yahoo has it indexed, but I get minimal traffic from it. Then the other day I noticed I’m getting like 200 pageviews a day from bing.com out of nowhere:

Check it out – isn’t that weird? I did fix what I thought the problem was with the google indexing, and I did request reinclusion to try to get back into the google search engine. But even if your web site doesn’t have google indexing problems – you want to make sure that your site is “registered” in all 3 search engines. You might not even get listed in Yahoo! or or Bing if you don’t register your site (and your sitemap!). I’ve blogged about all this before, but I have many new readers since the last time I mentioned it, so I may have to revisit it in a future post series.

In the meantime – if you don’t already know it all 3 search engines have a “webmaster tools” login where you can register both your site and your sitemap.

1. If you don’t already have a sitemap, install the Wordpress plugin Google XML Sitemaps

2. Register your site and sitemap with Google Webmaster Tools

3. Register your site and sitemap with Yahoo Site Explorer

4. Register your site and sitemap with Bing Webmaster Center

Maybe Bing.com or one of the other search engines can bring your site back from the dead!
