actually you didn't have to do that, there are plugins now like mass post edit, and also WP 2.7x+ has quick and bulk edit features. Visit wordpress.tv for a video on how to do this.

wow! OK, I get it but will have to read it several times to have it really sink in. I blogged for over a year with WordPress before I realized that I should only use just one category per post. Man, I had to go back and change all my posts on dozens of Blogs. Thanks for this great post.

The biggest problem I see with Internet business websites that fail (and eventually go off line) is the owners let their business get stale. They put no time or effort into marketing them, adapting to the changing web, or adjusting to their customer needs. Any Internet business owner that thinks they can put up a website, add all the products in, add all the pages in and never touch the site content (or anything else in it for that matter) again for a year is in for a rude awakening!

Thanks Charles - I'll have to check out that plugin.

I'm not sure I like the idea of putting content in php files for my unique category headers. What if I want to change something on my category pages? Yep - I'll have to manually edit each category's php file. I think that kinda defeats the purpose of a CMS.

What I've been doing is using the description field for my unique content in the Manage -> Categories screen and just making sure I have the following in my archive.php :

and voila! - there's my unique content at the top of every category page.

What I DO like about the Category pages plugin is that it allows you to use the TinyMCE interface to put in rich-text(bold,italics,etc.) and images, etc. It beats coding HTML into the category description field.

Hope I didn't steal your upcoming idea JT!

Charles -

Great Idea. I'm going to try the plugin and see if I like it.

While JTs solution is a good one, I don't like the idea of managing content in the Theme Editor and maintaining all my different categories with different files. What if I want to make a change to my category pages? Yep, I have to edit all my category php files. I think that kinda defeats the purpose of a CMS.

What I've been doing so far is simply putting my unique content in the Description field under Manage -> Categories and then making sure I have

before the Loop in my archive.php (or category.php) page. Viola! There's all my beautiful unique content on the top of every category page.

I was using the <a href="http://www.laptoptips.ca/projects/category-description-editor/" rel="nofollow"> Category Description Editor </a> plugin to be able to use rich-text and add images, etc. but it's not compatible with WP 2.5.

So for now, I'm just writing my category content in Dreamweaver, then pasting it into the description field in the Manage -> Categories page.

This way I'm not creating pages in WP or category php files.

That's a good option - but maybe not necessarily the best one. Creating a bunch of pages in Wordpress isn't much better than creating a bunch or templates. In theory it's the exact same thing, and one stores the page in the database and other in a physical template file. I think I've found a way to do this same thing (have original content on the top of every category page) with only 1 file to deal with. Maintenance wise- much easier. Keep tuned to my posts this week for the answer on how to do this...

Found a plugin that will help add content to category pages.

The Plugin is <a href="http://pixline.net/wordpress-plugins/category-page-wordpress-plugin/en/" rel="nofollow">Category Pages</a>

I found it yesterday and tested it this morning. It does for categories what JT is telling us to do with the template.

We can write a page and save it (don't need to pulish it). We then check a little category box to associate the page with a category. . . and bingo you have your header information that is unique.

You do need to make an alteration to your archives page--see the page on "how to" for the plugin. It's very easy.

I like the plugin over having to modify a template for each category. The reason is, if you have several wordpress blogs going your category number for the same topic can be different and an ID # isn't the easiest way to remember what is what. The tags use slugs so they are easy to keep track of, however it would be great to have a plugin that does both . . . for those that aren't ready to add a bunch of template pages.

Hope this helps those who don't want to mess with the templates.
Enjoy. . .

I hate to disagree with JT however, search engines do read the keyword meta.

I've heard that they don't from SEO gurus and until just a couple of days ago I would have agreed with JT. I didn't bother with the keywords meta. Then I was doing a search for a long tail. This is for a site I've been experimenting with.

Let's say I searched A B C (three words). I have A & B in my title tag and on page and C is a hyperlink on the page, thus all words are on page. I'm doing everything a good SEO should do. My page is #2 and the #1 page has B & C in the title tag and on page but A doesn't exist. . . . hmmmm, I thought. Why are they beating me. Now I know this page has no back links for this particular keyword. So I look at the source code and it shows in the keywords meta, 4 times.

I think the search engines look at everything in your code. They may give it a very low priority but they still look at it. It wouldn't be showing up on the cached pages if they really didn't care. I think what the SEO gurus see with the keyword meta tag is that the priority given is so low that they don't feel it is worth it. This seems to be true especially for very competitive phrases—you need back links!! And lots of them.

However, if you are going for something very specific and all things are equal with two pages I think the search engines use things like keywords as a tie breaker.

Now hopefully as we learn more about SEO we won't need a tie breaker ;)

If you really want keywords meta tag you can put it into the template. If your site is generally about one thing then you can hard code it in.

Otherwise.....I agree with JT that is probably isn't worth the time and effort especially if you write good copy and get your links.
